Our to 5 St. Marteen Anchorages are:

Grand Case

This is always rated one of the top anchorages in the Caribbean by cruiser for many reasons. Its a big bay with a beautiful big beach. Their is a dinghy dock for easy access to the town.

Their is a really long main street with all kinds of shopping, bars and places to eat. On the wekend they close off the street and their is a block party with live music and local food vendors. The holding in the bay is incredable and well protected from the prevailing weather.

Marigot Bay

Located on the Eastern Coast on the French side this is a massive anchorage. The holding is excelent. I got got in a 30 knot storm that lasted for hours. Their were easily 100 or more boats anchoredin this harbor and not a single one dragged.

This is one of the few places in the Caribbean taht you are actually charged per day for anchoring. However it is rarely enfornced. You can head into the dinght dock or go inder the little bridge to Port Royale marina to clear in. It's a french island so it's cheep (under $10 to clear in) and fast.

Simpson Bay

The entrance is on the Dutch side on the south part of the island. Their are two anchorages here. One outside the bridge, in the bay and the lagoon. Most boats make their way into the lagoon. When your waiting for one of the threee daily bridge openings you will be in the outer bay.

Out here the holding is great and the water is crystal clear and emerald colored. Their are beaches on either side of you. Their is a little less protection then inside the lagoon. The laggon is shallow. It only has 7-10 feet of water and the channel in is pretty narrow. Their is also a swing bridge you have to wait for to open.

Orient Beach

Orient beach made the list because the beach their is amazing. This is a tricky anchorage on the North east side of the island. The only protection you have is provided by a reef. You will be protected from the swell but not the wind. Its a very sandy bottom so the holding is good.

Happy Bay

Not far down the coast from Grande case is Happy bay. It's aptly named. It puts a smile on my face everytime I go their. It has great protection from the east winds. The anchorage is narrow though so swell does get in here.

The beach has beautiful lite tan sand which is fine. Their a couple of big bushes to provide shade during the day. It is a private beach but is nothing there. It was one of last years venues for the SXM music festival. There were hundreds of people their for a full 5 days. I don't think anyone would mind if you dropped anchor and hit the beach.
