Puerto Rico Anchorages

The west end is a great place to anchor and is very protected from the prevailing east wind. Boqueron has great holding.

Our to 5 Puerto Rico Anchorages are:

Boqueron

This is my favorite anchorage in Puerto Rico. The holding is great. Their is decent wind protection and the beach is amazing. It's a very cruiser friendly area and their a ton of bars and places to eat right on the dinghy dock. Thier isn't much provisioning available here. It's an all out block party here on the weekends. Make sure to get here on a Friday.

Puerto Real

The only reason why this anchorage is number two on my list is because their is no beach. Other then that this is a great spot. The bottom is muddy so the holding is great. The marina their is cheep and they will call customs to come to your boat and clear you in. It's the perfect alternative to Mayaguez.

Their is a little bar and place to eat in the marina. A few feet down the main road their are a few other bars and local spots to eat. Their is a small market but thier isn't much in it.

San Juan

This is the main port in Puerto Rico. It is on the north side and a little harder to get to then heading around the south coast. (The south coast is a better route to traverse the island.) Way in the back by club nautico is a good place to anchor. It's a little tight in their but its the only viable place. Closer to the entrance of the port their are constantly tankers and cruise ships coming in and out. It's not a good place to anchor.

Ensenada Honda

This anchorage is on the out island of Culebra. It has amazing protection on 3 sides or about 300 degress. There is a narrow entrance but once you in you will love it.

The water is crystal clear and the beaches are beautiful. It's hard to get to if you don't have a boat. There is a national wildlife refuge. So take the time to head out and enjoy the beauty.

Ponce

This is a great place to stop on your way across the south coast of Puerto Rico. It can be used as a bailout spot if the prevailing easterlies kick up. The swell builds quickly on the south side when the wind gusts to 20 knots. It is a major city. It's fairly well protected and the holding is good. Their is alot of culture here. A few amazing museums, plenty of bars and places to eat.
